The sound of skis sliding over snow cuts through the alpine silence, a big breath of fresh air to fuel the rhythmical movement with the Combins massif looming in the distance. We invite you to discover the mountains of Verbier through cross-country skiing.
The origins of the piste and its different trails
Located on the southern slope, this location between Les Ruinettes et La Chaux attracted a group of passionate cross-country skiers in the noughties. The idea of creating a cross-country ski trail at Les Ruinettes emerged from a discussion in the environs of a café in which some volunteers of the association Val de Bagnes Ski de Fond got together and visualised the project using topographical aids. Thereafter, Willie Fellay, a volunteer with a keen eye for innovative ideas, contacted Téléverbier to work with them on the idea and offer the public access to this splendid playground.
As a fun, all-round activity for everyone, it was imperative to design a hybrid piste suited to all levels of proficiency. The piste initially comprises a 5km circuit to la Chaux and accommodates the classic and skating styles.
The piste has been very successful since its opening. Prepared daily by the Téléverbier team, it is used by all types of skiers, whatever their motivation or skill level, who appreciate the trail’s natural light and beauty.
Constructive feedback from clubs expanded the scope of the project. In 2023, some changes were made to the piste with gentler turns and more elevation gain; enhancing its quality and reputation. The new part has two loops of up to 1.4 km. This challenging loop is an extension of the current one with slightly more technical ascents and descents. This new piste passes below Jumbo and takes you beneath the stables at La Chaux.
A piste with a lot to offer
This piste's high altitude ensures optimal snow throughout the winter season. It attracts many competitors who benefit from the elevation for cardiovascular training in a peaceful setting. The potential of this piste is unmistakeable. Thanks to the support of local passionate actors, there is scope for extending the piste and even hosting competitions there. One thing is for sure, its transformation will be worth following!
Access to the piste:
The piste can be reached by cable car from le Châble ou Médran. From a height of 2,200m, you have a number of possibilities depending on your level and what you feel like on any given day.
Classic loop (beginner-intermediate level) : follow the signposted cross-country ski trail to the right of the hiking trail. It offers an unimpeded view of the Combins range and is bathed in sunlight. The return involves turning round and going the other way down the piste.
- Details and technical aspects of the blue run:
- 6km (round trip), 15m elevation gain
- Accessible for beginners
Athletic loops (intermediate-advanced level): start on the classic loop (blue run), then once you arrive at the end of the piste, branch off to the left which goes down gently. About 30 metres after turning left, you have two options.
You can either take the red run, which is a gentle slope but has many hairpin turns, which makes it somewhat challenging technically. Along this trail, you will find a number of places offering panoramic views.
The other option is to take the black run going up towards Jumbo. This piste features a greater elevation gain with two quite technical turns. After the black run, you go back down via the red run and finish off with the blue run.
